Our story, which proceeds at light speed because this film is barely 90 minutes with credits, revolves around two alien brothers. Sequences set to chart-ready pop songs? Sledgehammer-subtle moralising message? Fart jokes? Toilet humour? Jokes specifically for parents that typically involve gay panic or implied rape as punchlines? Pop culture references in place of actual jokes? Obnoxious product placement? An unfunny catchphrase repeated ad nauseam in an effort to make it the next cultural phenomenon because if you say it enough times then kids will eventually start saying it too? (It’s “Scorch me, baby” in case you’re wondering.) Bored celebrities turning in paycheque collecting performances? Really cheap animation? They’re all here and all accounted for and result in one of the most singularly boring bad movies I have had the displeasure of sitting through in quite some time. Chances are it shows up here at least three times. Think of every single bad trait of your stereotypically bad kids’ animated film. They made the first ever all-CG cartoon TV series in the form of Re-Boot, they’ve been pumping out Direct-To-DVD Barbie films since 2001, they made that one Dire Straits video that everyone remembers as well as something called Tony Hawk in Boom Boom Sabotage (which, yes, I have seen before… it’s not good), and they’re going to give us big screen versions of Ratchet & Clank and Sly Cooper in the near future! Past experience is past experience and I was hoping for a good film.Įscape From Planet Earth is not a good film. Rainmaker Entertainment, the people responsible for the film, aren’t exactly first-timers. Naturally, that info bode well for what I was going to see. I was told this by an American friend of mine over Twitter whilst I killed time waiting for it to start. It’s been on Netflix Instant over there for a good while, too. It got its American release on February 13th of 2013. Not at all.įun Fact: this film has been out in America for over a year. My family and I were provided a gift card to watch this movie and provide our honest opinion. You could probably make a good movie out of Escape From Planet Earth. After leaving the theater, all thoughts of the film are over and done and you can discuss where to get something to eat. The graphics are slick and characters are overall happy ones. The story is very easy to follow and there aren’t any dramatic or dark scenes. It’s 1-1/2 hours of sibling rivalry, silly aliens, and pieces of tape that explode. Not quite the message I want being sent to young boys and girls.Įscape From Planet Earth is a movie most appealing to young children. The theme song by Bruno Mars is also a strange pairing as the lyrics allude to a proud practice of seducing women, using them, then leaving them heartbroken so he can move on and do it again with someone else. While there are a few big names in the credits, the voice acting is sub-par and seem completely unconnected with the on-screen characters. Also, how is it the most intelligent aliens in the universe are so clueless? Even my daughter was saying that didn’t make sense. For example, three other aliens were stranded on earth for years yet, for some reason, after escaping back into space their planets are completely bypassed and they aren’t returned home. There are no deeper plots and several ‘holes’ in comprehensive logic creep in. It’s one of those movies that you watch as-is. The story is predictable and character development is shallow. However, for parents and older tweens/teens, it’s kind of boring. There are several one-liners and visual gags perfectly tailored to younger viewers. He’s easy to relate to and I liked that he had a respectful, balanced relationship with his parents overall. The little ‘boy’, Kip, is an exciting, adventurous, and smart kid who loves his family but just wants to have fun. Young children from the ages of 4-10 will likely enjoy this film. That’s not to say it wasn’t a nice flick. We had high expectations for this movie with all the greatness we saw in last year’s films. A rescue mission to the “Dark Planet” (aka Earth) goes wrong and it’s up to Gary, the brains, to save his brother and thwart the plans of a bitter Area 51 director. This light-hearted, computer-animated film follows two alien brothers from the planet Baab with one being the brains and one being the brawn on official missions. Last week we had the chance to see our first family-friendly movie of 2013, Escape from Planet Earth. Email 2013 Movie Review of Escape From Planet Earth…
